Training
Methods
All of Jason's methods are based on common sense, and follow the principles of the 'natural horsemanship' used by generations of Australian horsemen. All of his work follows the concept of;
"Pressure - Result - Release - Reflect"
For example, he gives an aid (PRESSURE) to the horse for a particular movement. When he gets the correct movement (RESULT), he stops giving the aid and takes all pressure off the horse (RELEASE) and the horse is able to REFLECT and learn from the experience.
Starting Youngsters
Jason's main love is starting and training youngsters. He has experience with all types and breeds, but believes that all horses and ponies need the same basics from the 'happy hacker' to the Grand Prix dressage horse. His training starts from gaining respect on the ground. After a 3-6 week period, the horse should be performing basic dressage movements in the school with some vertical and lateral flexion, pop over a small jump, hack alone and in company and will have been exposed to hazards such as ditches, water, traffic and load noises (Jason cracking his stock whip!).
The starting process does not finish with the ridden work. The horse will learn how to be shod, to be led, loaded and tied-up and generally behave in a safe way with good manners!
Re-Training ‘Problem' horses
Jason has had success with just about all behavioural problems and has turned around 'dangerous' horses that have been recommended by vets to be put down. The most common problems that he comes across are loading and shoeing, and rearing, napping and bolting when being ridden. However, Jason firmly believes that re-education does not stop with the horse, but is equally important for the rider!
In the majority of cases, horses come to us for re-training. However,
in exceptional circumstances, such as loading problems, Jason will
travel out to clients.
